The Wings Over Wine Country Air Show is one of the coolest air shows in Northern California, and not just because a fair portion of the show takes place right over my house.
I went this past weekend with the two little helpers, aged 4 and 2. By and large it was a good time, though I have some pointers:
1) Bring a chair – you are on the tarmac, and there isn’t a lot of places to sit
2) Bring shade, a hat, sunscreen, and water. It gets hot out there.
3) Get there early, and you can stake out a spot in the shade under some of the planes.
4) Corrolary to (3), some of the planes you are camping under will move, as this is an air show where planes fly. If you try to sit under the c-17 all day, you may be run over when it taxis for take-off.
5) Go on – buy the turkey leg from Willie Bird’s. When else are you ever going to eat a whole turkey leg? (Aside from County Fair, Harvest Fair and Thanksgiving.)
I was amazed how close we could get to the action, walking among p-51s, A-10s, stunt planes and even classic cars. The S.W.A.T. team demonstration was exciting, though a bit much for the 2-year old.
All in all, well worth the admission, and I can’t wait to see it again next year.
Best quote from the video – “He says it’s like flying an airplane with a gorilla sitting RIGHT on your chest!”
