Win $250 for Sonoma’s Tastiest Chicken Dish Print

One clucky – lucky – winner will win $250 for Sonoma’s Tastiest Chicken Dish

Why did the chicken cross the road? Likely, it was to escape chef John Ash, and his upcoming “Top of the Roost” chicken recipe contest. Who knew chickens could run that fast on their little legs?

Indeed, it is time once again for KSRO Radio’s 25th annual Good Food Hour cook-off, and this year’s featured ingredient is poultry. As Chef Ash, Sonoma County’s best-known food and wine ambassador and co-host of KSRO’s Good Food Hour points out, the humble bird is often overlooked as a simple dish. Which is a mistake.

“Fried, grilled, sautéed, roasted, poached … chicken is a true global culinary star,” he said. “Wherever you are, be it a four-star restaurant, an international street food market, sipping Grandma’s chicken soup at work, or sitting down to a home cooked Sunday meal; the versatility of chicken is unmatched.”

If you agree with Ash, and you believe you have a winning way with the winged creatures, you need to enter the contest. Email, mail, or fax your original recipe entries to the radio station. A group of judges, including Ash, will comb through (comb, that’s a rooster joke), and peck, um, pick the best recipes to trim the group to four finalists.

Here’s a hint: Ash said the judges are looking for dishes that are as creative as they are delicious, and “fun” is a bonus, too.

“Chicken can be wrapped and rolled, seasoned and sauced, while never losing its identity,” Ash said. “And since we’re fortunate to live where delicious chicken is locally raised and available year-round, it’s the perfect ingredient for our fall recipe contest.”

The finalists will take the stage on Saturday, Nov. 12, at G&G Supermarket, 1211 West College Avenue in Santa Rosa. They will present their chicken-y candidates at 11a.m. for the Good Food Hour broadcast and a taste-off with Chef Ash, Good Food co-host Steve Garner and a panel of celebrity judges. Winners will be selected during the live show, and must be present to claim their prizes.

What does the County’s finest finger lickin’ chicken bring? First place scores $250 cash courtesy of Petaluma Poultry, and runners up waltz away with gift certificates, cookbooks, wine, and cooking classes. And as an extra special honor this year, one of the winning recipes will be included in the upcoming John Ash cookbook, “Culinary Birds,” which is priceless for its bragging rights.

Here’s how to enter: email, mail, or fax your original recipe entries to: KSRO Recipe Contest, P.O. Box 2158, Santa Rosa, CA 95405 / fax (707) 571-1097 / email steve@ksro.com.  Note that deadline for entry is Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 at 5 p.m., so get your kitchen fired up, and round up those chickens fast.
