Whippersnappers in Raccoon Coats, Tasting Barrels

Peg Melnik’s latest blog post over at the local newspaper of record asks whither goest the annual Wine Road Barrel Tasting. As proof, she quotes a “Couple from Ohio” and relates how:

“…they will never take part in the event again because of the antics of the younger crowd. They said it was more of a raucous party than a wine tasting.”

At first I was a bit put off by the posting, feeling as it is a quick way to bang out some blog copy with the classic “things were better back before you knew about it” angle to reporting, second only to the even worse meta-blog about other people’s blog, the sheer epitome of bad blogging. (Ahem.)

Also, I know people from Ohio, some of whom are relatives, and they would never use the word “antics” or “raucous”. At least not my relatives. If they did, they are no doubt about to ask you for money.

But upon going back to my own recollections of the event, I think Peg might have a point. To further investigate, I went to Flickr (motto: “Backing up what your friends said you did last night with digital proof”) and searched for barrel tasting. Lo and behold, and 23-skiddo, it seems the event was inundated with young Turks talking in strange lingo, all whilst drinking wines.
