The In-laws are coming to Sonoma County in a few days.
They haven’t been out here in two years. And the last time they saw the little Sonoma Insiders was Christmas 2007, when we spent two weeks in the frozen tundra of Green Bay, not to mention 30 hours in the vapid wastelands of O’Hare Airport en route. Good times.
Rather than rack my brain thinking of things for them to do, I will instead embrace the trend of asking the collecting hive-mind (“strangers from the internet”) to help me plan their itinerary.
So, here’s how it goes:
They are here Wednesday – Sunday.
Wed is lost to airport (SFO) and complaints about the election (outcome doesn’t matter.)
Sunday is back to San Francisco and inquiries about when we’ll be in Green Bay again. (As soon as we get direct flights from Sonoma County Airport, STS, to Green Bay Airport, CHEEZ.)
Thus, I need ideas for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Send me ideas via comments below, and we will tell the inlaws where to go together.
Best ideas win something special, to be determined by me.
Some parameters:
- Activities must be affordable, or if not, so cool that they will feel compelled to pick up the tab.
- Suggestions must not entail anything viewed as opposing the Packers. No debate on this.
- Would be most excellent if many of the activities take place from 8 – 6, when Inside Sonoma is at work.
Alright Internets – do your magic! Send itinerary ideas via comments below.
Thanks,
The Outlaw Son

I’m sure you’ve already visited http://www.sonomacounty.com and requested a Sonoma County guide book and map. If not, do it NOW, dude.
So, with little insiders in tow, nothing says “Grandma, buy me …” like the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa. After, take the in-laws for a spin on the ice at the Redwood Empire Ice Rink. A Christmas picture in the making — Grandma and the kiddies surround Grandpa lying on a stretcher getting ready to be loaded into an ambulance. Just think, if it’s a broken hip, you won’t have to visit the frozen tundra for Christmas, because they’ll still be here waiting for the physical therapy to do its job!
Wine tasting makes a in-law visit more palatable. I start “tasting” about a week before mine come into town and I don’t put the cork back in until a week after they leave.
Tina you crack me up. Will look into ice-skating for them, wine tasting for me.
So what did you end up doing with the in laws- did they love their visit to Sonoma Country? No broken bones, but lots of wine tasting?
Ok- After Action Report:
The in-laws took in Rodney Strong and J. They had a great time at both, and they came back with some bottles of Rodney Strong.
They also did the Redwoods at Armstrong Woods, and Bodega Bay, where they hiked the cliffs along Bodega Head, and finally got some chowder.
When they had the grandkids, they hung around the Town Green in Windsor, and took them to dinner at DePaoli’s, Fred Langley’s place over there that is good for kids and adults.
Wonder where they will send me when I go to Green Bay?
