Sonoma Walking Tour

George Webber is one interesting guy.

If you go to the small town of Sonoma, and ask anyone, and I mean anyone who knows anyone, if they know George, if they are a true local, they will know him.

Although, they might describe him as either:

  • The last Mexican Governor of California, General Vallejo, who was forced to give up Mexico’s title to the state when a band of boisterous (read: drunken) Sonomans tied him to a chair and claimed the creation of the “Bear Flag Republic”
  • The boy from Hannibal, MO who grew up to be Mark Twain (nee Samuel Clemens) who is occasionally spotted on the Sonoma Plaza
  • An Italian cook named Luigi who cooks for groups and in between lessons on the local culinary scene fills your glass with some of Sonoma’s finest
  • A Professor of Wine, aptly named Professor Vine, who merrily teaches about wine and how it can be enjoyed, sans snobbery.
  • The guy who does those walking tours around town

Obviously, George is not just a tour guide, but rather “Wine Country’s Professional Multiple Personality Artiste” as he describes himself on his very own site.

Not Webber - Vallejo

Not Webber - Vallejo

Next time you are in the Sonoma Plaza and see either General Vallejo, Mark Twain, Luigi, Professor Vine or, uh, George, say hi. He might have a good story for you.

You can book tix for George’s tour here, or check out his site here.

Nope- not Webber. This is Twain.

  1. I, General Vallejo, have been authorized by the many other entities encased within George Webber’s skull to thank Inside Sonoma for being included in the recent Inside Sonoma blog. When I first arrived in Sonoma in 1823 to look in at the newly established Mission, the Sonoma Valley appeared to me as a ‘fountain of fountains!”

  2. My wife and me have been regaled by this veritable font of Sonoma lore, mirth and knowledge. Found him to be one of the most engaging and entertaining educators I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. I can corroberate your testament as to his accumen, fine taste, eloquence and merry disposition. Knows where to find tasty vittles, dry goods and a clean bed, too. Next time I’m in your “wine country” it’s my intention to buy that man a whistle wetter just to lure a story from him.

  3. I recently visited your lovely valley- I enjoyed the wonderful tour of Sonoma Town Square and Mission soooo much, I booked Mr. Weber’s tour of (can I say the name?) Napa! It was just as pleasant- he ended the tour by showing us where we could get a little something to refresh ourselves with. I can’t recommend his services more!!

  4. Greg- thanks for the update and thanks for visiting Sonoma County!

No doubt you have now seen that the concept of George Webber is a bit too big for just one county- that’s why we share him with our neighbors to the east over in Napa.

Our only requirement is that he be home by sundown. Sonoma needs George Webber.

As for your own visit – please let us know when you are coming back. The town of Sonoma is one of many jewels in the Sonoma Wine Country crown. Wait till you see the redwoods coming out of the mist along the Russian River, or check out the stunning cliffs along the Pacific Coast, or even spend an afternoon up at the Dry Creek General Store… Enough of that, when you come back, we’ll point you to new adventures.

    Thanks again!
