Sonoma Vacation – Complex, Oaky… 92 points

Ever read the stuff they print on the back of a wine bottle? The bad stuff tends to fall into two types:

1) “Dancing about architecture…” where the writer attempts to convey the experience of tasting the wine in words. These descriptions sound like this: “A delightful bouquet reminscent of kumquats, anise and sambal complements the medium body and hirsute lower extremities of this vintage. Mouthfeel is wet, with an aftertaste of minerality like Ag, C and possibly the shocking combination of FU.  Overall, a recommended buy. Pair it with loose chinos and a ragg sweater.”

2) Cute: “Did someone call for a Checker Cab…ernet? Hop in for a ride of good times with great friends. The flag is dropped, and you’re in the express lane! Next stop – Winehattan!” Cute notes can also include references to beloved pets, anitipodean bush animals, celebrities (dead or otherwise) and sports franchises. Green Bay Packer Pinot? Had it. Paired with booyah.

So here’s your chance to write your own tasting notes – only this time not for wine.

Now you can share your vacation tasting notes. Talk about what you did in wine country. Where did you go? What did you do? Eat anything cool? Be as complex or simple as you want. Write whatever – it’s your vintage!

Here’s mine:

Spent three days in wine country- felt great! First day out at the coast – scents of sea salt, fresh crab and Spud Point chowder. Headed to the redwoods for the next day, stopping for a cup of coffee at the Coffee Bazaar in Guerneville before huggingthe 310-foot Parson Tree. Notes of moss and ferns and accents of dappled sunlight, punctuated by the staccato burst of woodpeckers overhead. Final day spent between Alexander Valley and Sonoma Valley. Lunch at Jimtown Store was redolent of deep, dark chocolate pudding. In fact, lunch was deep dark chocolate pudding. Tasted at Hawkes Winery, then swung down to catch General Vallejo giving a tour on the Sonoma Plaza. Wine blending at Ravenswood with Joel, and then off to dinner at Sante. Fantastic finish- must cellar and try again soon.
