Santa Rosa’s Casa Del Mar

If size really matters, then the newly opened Casa Del Mar in Santa Rosa has got it going on. The place, which was under construction for more than a year as it revamped the former La Strada space, is huge. Room after room yawns through the cavernous, rough concrete-floored building. There’s a sizeable bar, several dining rooms and a patio.

And soon, the nightclub portion of the enterprise will open, contained in a large ballroom off the entry foyer and featuring live music until 2 a.m.

The menu, too, is enormous, focusing on seafood (Del Mar, got it?) in the guise of shrimp, various fish, octopus, oysters and langoustine done up as enchiladas, cocktails, brochettes, tostadas, burritos, tacos, quesadillas, empanadas, soups and salads. There are the other usual suspects, too, of meat and chicken based tamales, chile rellenos, fajitas…you get the idea.

Start the fiesta at breakfast, choosing green chilaquiles with beans, potatoes, guacamole and corn or flour tortillas; or classic huevos rancheros. Move into lunch, with assorted combo plates, such as mole enchiladas sidling up next to beans and rice. Then, it’s dinner – the Pancho Villa molcajete, perhaps, offering grilled steak, Mexican cactus, avocado, cambray onion, tomato and jalapeno?

The owners also run El Terasco taqueria in Sebastopol, so in a nod to the ‘hood, there’s a “Sabastopol’s favorite” salad (their spelling, not mine), tossing organic greens tossed with roasted vegetables, or a “Sabastopol” burrito of tofu and black beans stuffed in a wheat tortilla.

Details: Casa Del Mar, 3660 Stony Point Road, Santa Rosa, 707-541-6140.

When you go to Casa Del Mar, must try the freshest tasting shrimp cocktail – large generous portion of shrimp served in a huge glass goblet with a whole sliced avocado, minced onion and cilantro. Tasted like I was in Puerto Vallarta. Also try the shrimp empanada – excellent juicy minced shrimp and tomato filling with a perfectly fried hand-rolled crust. Can’t wait to try again!

Unfortunately Casa del Mar does not have a website. It would be nice if all restaurants posted their menus online, as so many people would like to see a preview.

I just at there – they updated their menu – much better – I had a burrito and it was wonderful – the empanadas are out of this world. The restaurant itself is majestic too. Another cool feature is the lights in the hallways and bathroom have sensors to save energy and they have cool hand dryers in the bathroom – nice to see a green conscious business.
