January may not be the ideal time for tubing on the river, but region’s GLBT playground, centered around Guerneville, still makes for an enchanting, peaceful weekend getaway. The romantic Sonoma Orchid Inn, for instance, has fireplaces in several of its room (and TIVO, for that matter – a pretty fun perk for holing up in your room with your honey). Through April 26, this gay-owned farmhouse inn with close proximity to Westside Road wineries, offers its top rooms for between $155 and $185 per night (about 20% off summer rates) – stay three nights, and you get the fourth one free.
Within walking distance of Guerneville’s boutiques, cafes, and gay bars, the Highlands Resort is longtime favorite of lesbians and gays. The redwood-shaded compound of 16 comfy, rustic (no TVs or phones) cabins welcome pets and have gas fireplaces and small kitchens in many instances. Already quite affordable (two shared-bath units are especially inexpensive), the Highlands cabins run from $65 to $175 nightly between November and April. That’s roughly 10% off the summer rates; however, through March 31, the Highlands offers a third night free when you book two nights. Even if you only have time to visit for a couple of nights, you can check out as late as you’d like that third night – handy if you’re out exploring the final day of a weekend visit and want to come back, clean up, or relax a bit before heading home.
