After a hiatus that left Sonoma diners hungry for their favorite French bistro fare, there’s reason to perk up: Restaurant Mirepoix reopened Wednesday night, and with a new, elegant prix-fixe menu. Look for my full review soon, plus news on more changes to the restaurant, but in the meantime, here’s a taste of what executive chef Matthew Bousquet has in store for your supper.
The concept is four courses for $45, five courses for $55, and six courses for $65. Doing the math, your best value is the six course feast, and that’s what you’ll want to do anyway, to sample as many of chef Bousquet’s classic dishes as you can.
Start with what the chef playfully calls “vegetal,” which could mean plant or vegetable. But not ordinary greens. Instead, you might choose egg in a hole on brioche with frisee, onions and brie; or risotto, pumpkin, parmesan reggiano and black truffles.
Next up is fish, perhaps red mullet over potatoes, celery and foie gras; or lobster atop pork belly, salsify, leeks and tarragon-vanilla. Then, it’s on to meat, such as sweetbreads, potato and horseradish; or quail and beignet with chestnut, onions, sweet potato and apple. Finish with a cheese plate, and a selection of desserts.
Order the six course set-up, and the chef adds in extra options.
As for wine, sommelier Bryan Bousquet is offering a special flight series showcasing one Sonoma County varietal against the same varietal from other parts of the world.

The pumpkin risotto was fantastic! One of the best risotto’s I have ever had. This could become my new favorite fall dish.
Had the great pleasure of dining with friends at this charming bistro in Windsor last night. The breathtaking variety within each category is almost overwhelming. The fresh lemon “champagne”, the melt-in-your mouth little bread morsels, the brilliant pumpkin risotto, the mussels swimming in fragrant stock, the decadent froi gras and the sumptuous eight hour poached chicken with champagne sauce reduction were just a few of the indulgences we savored…and are still talking about! Absolutely brilliant…if you live in the area, go now and go often…you are so lucky!
