RENT at 6th Street Playhouse

production of this heartfelt rock opera in the warm surrounds of the GK Hardt Theatre and getting a glimpse of some homegrown talent.

Santa Rosa is welcoming home Broadway actress Stephanie St. James, who will star as Mimi.  St. James was born in Miami and grew up here, graduating from Santa Rosa High School.  She is proud of her multicultural and biracial heritage, with a Russian-Jewish mother and Guyanese father, and a grandmother who survived the Holocaust.  Best known for playing Squeak in the Broadway national touring production of Oprah Winfrey Presents “The Color Purple,” St. James has traveled globally performing in major musicals and theatrical productions.  Her performance of Squeak earned her an NAACP Theatre Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actress.  Based in Los Angeles she is also a singer-songwriter of a mix of musical styles including soul, rock and pop.

Also returning home to Sonoma County, Choreographer, Alia Curchack-Beeton, has been preparing for two productions with ‘RENT’ premiering on the same day as her first baby is born.  She has recently moved back to her hometown of Petaluma from England.  Curchack-Beeton received a BFA and the Gold Medal in Dance from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City and also trained at the Alvin Ailey School of Dance.  If her baby wasn’t due at the end of May, she has said would really have enjoyed being a part of the cast as well as being the choreographer.  While the 6th Street Playhouse production stays true to the original ‘RENT,’ Curchack-Beeton says “the talented cast and crew bring their own flavors and nuance to this timeless story, making for a boisterously fun and exquisitely moving theater experience.”

RENT runs May 28 to June 27.  8pm Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays.   2pm Saturdays and Sundays.
