West Coast Premier of 'Emmeline' at Cinnabar Theater

Tobias PickerPetaluma’s Cinnabar Theater is getting ready for its West Coast premier of Tobias Picker’s ‘Emmeline’ and the excitement is mounting with the news that the composer himself will be attending the opening weekend performances.  Picker will arrive in Sonoma County in time to attend the final rehearsals, offering his constructive advice as well as joining the audience for opening nights on May 28 and 29.

‘Emmeline,’ based on Judith Rossner’s novel of the same name, retells the Oedipus story from Jocasta’s point of view.  Set in 1841 Massachusetts, 13-year-old Emmeline (Carrie Hennessey of Sacramento) is sent to the textile mills so she can help support her family. She makes it through the hard times and falls in love as an adult.  But upon being reunited with her family, a terrible truth is revealed.

Picker has composed a number of works in various genres.  While he’s not the first composer to visit Cinnabar, the theater’s Artistic and Executive Director and director of ‘Emmeline,’ Elly Lichenstein, says that “’Emmeline’ is not your garden variety opera. Ambitious, you bet.  Will Mr. Picker be picky?  Will he delight?  We hope for a bit of both.”  With Picker’s romantic score, get ready for an emotional ride.
