When we found out that Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse would be finishing their season with a hit Broadway musical, we were curious to see what was in the works. Luckily they brought “Rent” to our
doorstep for its North Bay Premier. “Rent” is a revelation. I admit I had never managed to see it and can’t believe the fanfare and acclaim had not driven me to seek it out – or even to see the movie.
The G.K. Hardt Theater, which seats 184, lends a personal feel for this touching story and lets you literally feel the rock opera’s big vocals while still hearing the whispers of some songs. The set transports you to Alphabet City in New York City’s Lower East Side, where a group of struggling artists are determined not to give up their zest for life in spite of their poverty and the pall of AIDS.
Tyler Costin’s Roger and Stephanie St. James’ Mimi are believable as ex-junkie and junkie and their love story is really beautiful. ‘Light My Candle’ is a standout piece. Mark and Joanne’s ironic ‘Tango Maureen’ is done playfully by Robert K. Dornaus III and Sonya Distel. Daniel Schultz’s Angel is perfectly endearing and he set his character’s tone well from vivacious transvestite to a person consumed by AIDS. Shannon Rider Urquhart is compelling as the outrageously flirtatious Maureen, grabbing attention right from her show stopping entrance. The ensemble company does really well and some have really amazing vocals.
If you are going to be in Sonoma County this month and either have not seen “Rent” before or are already a fan, don’t miss your chance to catch a great production. You’re in the right place at the right time.
