Winding 10 miles through towering redwoods and green pastures, the Bohemian Highway connects three charming townships forgotten by time: Freestone, Occidental and Monte Rio. This secret gem in western Sonoma County hides a soulful community with a distinct feel: organic farms, small wineries, specialty nurseries, innovative shops, restaurants and superb hiking, biking and paddling.

Just 60 miles from San Francisco, the Bohemian Highway is easy to explore in a weekend.

Freestone

Inside Freestone Bakery

A cluster of classic western-style buildings sit in a scenic green valley with pastoral vistas and rolling hills, the Pomo Indians made their home here for centuries.

Russians grew wheat here in the early 1800′s to support their northern settlements prior to the issuance of Spanish land grants. The town was a center for harvesting and milling redwood and in 1871 became a rail stop on the North Coast Pacific Railroad. Arrive early for the cheese bread at the Wild Flour Bakery, linger late for a spa treatment at Osmosis, the only spa in the US that features a cedar-enzyme bath and a leader in “green spa” best practices.

Occidental

Downtown Occidental

Tucked among the redwoods between Freestone and Monte Rio lies the hamlet of Occidental. Originally the last stop west for the Pacific Railroad, Occidental hosts a variety of exceptional restaurants and unique shops, with wineries and tasting rooms nearby. For a different experience, reserve the circus room at the Inn at Occidental, for a feel of the big top among the big trees.

Cyclists and car clubs often stop here on their trips to the coast, seeking the incredible roads and impressive vistas from the ridge tops.

The Bohemian Farmers’ Market is June through October on Fridays- don’t miss the paella.

Monte Rio

Monte Rio Hotels on the river

“Welcome to Monte Rio- Vacation Wonderland” declares the sign hanging over the road. A quirky movie theater with hand-painted movie signs and some of the best beaches on the Russian River support that notion. Restaurants with decks on the water and small inns with river beaches complete the scene.

Fishing, kayaking, swimming, live theater and a wine shop that boasts some of the most unique wines in the county await.
