A serving of Humble Pie

Blink and you may miss it as you’re zipping through Penngrove, a town with a population of just 800 or so. It’s a terrific little restaurant, and it’s called Humble Pie.

With just a half dozen tables, HP serves more than pie – though pie is certainly a highlight, in the form of essentially anything that can be stuffed into pastry – be that shepherd’s pie, lasagna pie, peach-almond pie, or banana cream pie. The short line-up changes weekly, and until recently, we could only get a fix for dinner.

Yet owners Joshua Norwitt, Miriam Lee Donaldson, Brook McCann and Dan McCann recently expanded service to Sunday brunch. Which means from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., we can tuck into French toast stuffed with cream cheese (which kind of makes it pie), topped with strawberries and spiced syrup and paired with bacon.

The menu changes per the chefs’ whims, though the salmon scramble is a favorite, mixing up eggs with cream cheese and green onion alongside potatoes and fruit.

As the chefs note, “A good benny is a labor of love” and here the eggs Benedict come in the classic of silky hollandaise sauce, poached eggs and Canadian bacon on an English muffin. There’s baked-to-order frittata (which looks a lot like pie), and perhaps the best way to start the day, a bacon sandwich slathered with sweet tomato-onion relish and homemade mayo on brick oven bread served with a soft-boiled egg.

Plan your time right, and you may be able to spend the best part of a Saturday night-Sunday morning at HP. The restaurant often serves dinner until 2 a.m., catering to the Black Cat Bar next door. Pie for dinner, a little nap, then more pie for brunch – it’s a good plan, yes?
